Lorena Portilla – Fundraising Volunteer

Meet our Star Supporter, Lorena. Lorena has volunteered with us for over 13 years and is an integral part of the CCC family! She has been key in making our events a success by getting the Latin community in London involved.

“My work as a volunteer began in 2006 when I was going through a rough patch. I got introduced to the organization through a friend who worked at the Colombian Consulate, and thanks to her I got to know all the CCC staff really well and have seen first-hand the amazing work they do. And from then on my life in the UK drastically changed for the better.

Even though I had experience as a teacher at a Latin-American school and as an Assistant at the Panama Embassy, it was voluntary work that enabled me to see things differently and understand what was important. It is easy to get engrossed in our problems or get depressed about losing a job, going through a breakup, or any other difficult situations that can arise in life, especially when living in a foreign country. You have to learn a new language and face all types of cultural challenges But supporting Children Change Colombia as a volunteer has given me another focus, and think about the children at-risk in my country and how I can help them.

Often, volunteering helps you learn new skills and you immerse yourself in a different environment. In my case, with the CCC team at the London office , my contribution started by helping update the database, sending correspondence to supporters, participating in meetings and helping think of and promote new fundraising ideas. For example I  helped to find new donors and invited people to events that CCC organised, like the annual Thames Walk and Picnic, in Richmond Park.

The responsibility helped me feel that I was contributing and being useful to others; it reinforced the sense of belonging and encouraged me to think about the well-being of others. I became a positive person again.

Later, in 2014 I had the opportunity to visit the office in Cali, Colombia, as well as some of the partner projects, and I got to see first-hand all the positive changes that CCC brings to people's lives. CCC empowers volunteers and everyone involved, as much as the children who depend on us to raise awareness of the issues they are facing.

Lorena is one of our Star Supporters and has been volunteering with us since 2006 in a variety of roles and we couldn’t be more grateful for her dedication and commitment to Children Change Colombia.

She is an extremely positive and talented woman and is great at getting the Colombian community involved with events and other fundraising challenges, such as marathons and sponsored runs.

Volunteers like Lorena are the backbone of our organisation and we really could not do it without their support. So we want to say a BIG thank you to Lorena for everything she does so that we can continue working with children at-risk and help them build a better future for themselves and for Colombia.
